“In 2020, I ended up being diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma,” said David Fetter, owner and operator of the Mahana Fresh location in Stuart. “Once I had my left kidney removed, I really focused on good food, tried to eat balanced meals, and Mahana Fresh just fit.”
Fetter opened his Mahana Fresh location in March of 2023. The restaurant is a build-your-own-bowl concept with fresh veggies and proteins, brought in every two days from a local vendor. Nothing is frozen, all of the food is prepared daily, and the menu is stocked with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options!
“There’s a lot of places you can go in the Treasure Coast area, but not many that have a choice that’s healthy,” he said. “After being diagnosed with cancer, I really thought this would be a great plus. I’ve had other people tell me their stories about why they want to eat better and it’s amazing the repeat customers that keep coming back.”
The way it works is simple - pick your base, pick your veggies, pick your protein. Top it off with add-ons like avocado, feta, or roasted almonds. Choose a delicious sauce like cilantro vinaigrette or creamy wasabi.
Don’t forget to grab an organic juice or pick up a sweet treat like a gluten-free cookie or chocolate zucchini brownie. That’s right, zucchini-based brownies! Fetter said he served some recently to a group of women dining at the restaurant…
“I brought out the zucchini brownies out and said try these, I didn’t tell them they were zucchini (at first). I told them they were gluten free and zucchini based and they were just amazed,” he said. “I get the satisfaction of spreading the word of healthy eating.”
