Stop Texting, Start Driving: Explore Flamingo Gardens in Davie!

Flamingo Gardens is a wildlife sanctuary and a botanical garden in Davie, Florida.

It’s time to stop texting, and start driving! We’ve partnered with Steinger, Iscoe, & Greene to encourage you to put the phone down, focus on the road ahead, and drive somewhere amazing in South Florida. If you’ve never visited Flamingo Gardens in Davie, you need to hit the road! You can enjoy more than 70 acres of rare plants, tropical gardens, and a large collection of native Florida wildlife.

“What we are known for is our animals and our peacocks and flamingos, of course,” said Keith Clark, the executive director of Flamingo Gardens. “We have over 400 birds and animals which are permanently injured or non releasable, so we give them a permanent home here and we use those animals as ambassadors to educate people about the flora and fauna of the Everglades.”

Flamingo Gardens has so much more than just flamingos! If you’re looking for animals — you’ll find a black bear, otters, bobcats, alligators, peacocks, and so many other types of wildlife. You’ll also find some of the biggest trees in South Florida, like a large Banyan tree you can actually walk inside.

“There are areal roots that come down from the tree and they attach to the ground and they turn into trunks that turn into limbs and that’s why they spread out so far,” said Clark.

Flamingo Gardens is a true hidden gem in South Florida. Clark noted that it’s not very well known so visitors are always blown away by how quiet and peaceful it is.

“We got a little bit for everybody,” said Michael Ruggiere. “We have a historical site, we have 70 acres of beautiful gardens and we are also a wildlife sanctuary so even really just coming out buying admission seeing the park, you are contributing to the native wildlife in this area.”

Ruggieri has been the director of the Animal Care Department at Flamingo Gardens since 1990.

“People are flabbergasted when they come here. We hear it all the time, ‘I’ve lived in Davie all my life and I didn’t know you existed.’ We say it’s kind of one of Florida’s best kept secrets, it’s peaceful and quiet out here and there’s just so much history. We’re one of the oldest parks in Florida you know we’ve been here over 91 years a lot of people can’t say that,” he said.

Flamingo Gardens is located at 3750 S Flamingo Road in Davie. Get directions here. You can visit Monday through Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, call 954.473.2955 or visit flamingogardens.org.
