The holiday season is upon us and it’s time to get our shopping done! While you’re shopping for grandma Sue, cousin Eddie, and your neighbor Joan, don’t forget about one of the most important gifts of the holiday season — your gift for White Elephant! Depending on where you’re from, you might call this game Dirty Santa or Yankee Swap. Here in South Florida, we like to call it White Elephant.
The rules are simple. Everyone invited to the gift exchange brings a gift within the set price limit ($15-$30). You set the wrapped gifts in the center of the room and everyone draws a number. Whoever draws number 1 is the first person to select a gift to unwrap. The person who has number 2 has the option of either “stealing” the gift number 1 unwrapped, or selecting a new present from the pile to open. This continues until the last person has a gift and all the gifts are opened. A controversial part of the game is how many times a gift can be “stolen” before it is considered out of rotation. In my family — the rule is that a gift can touch three people’s hands before it lands with its permanent owner. But to each his own…just make sure you establish the rules early on in the game so you don’t cause any unnecessary holiday drama!
In my opinion, the best rounds of White Elephant are when people have put thought and effort into getting a good gift for the pot. You want a gift to be so desirable that it’s stolen multiple times, that’s the whole point of the game!
Want to be the life of the party and bring the gift that people will be talking about until next year’s game? Here are a few items you might want to consider bringing to your next White Elephant gift exchange:
1. Oreo Mug Ultimate Dunking Gift Set with Cookies
This gift is the one that keeps giving! It’s a bit of a gag gift, but it would definitely be something unexpected and hilarious. Plus, who doesn’t love dunking Oreos in their milk? This just makes life a whole lot easier. You can find it here on Amazon.
2. Chefman Electric Wine Opener
Someone brought an electric wine opener during an office gift exchange last year and it was stolen several times. This was a hot commodity! Luckily, I was strategic and made sure I was the last person to steal it before it was “officially” out of rotation. It now rests comfortable in my kitchen drawer and my life has been made a little bit easier thanks to this guy. Highly recommend! Get it here on Amazon.
3. Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) – Smart speaker with Alexa
Who doesn’t love Alexa? She can play your favorite music, tell you what the temperature is outside, and order you whatever your heart desires right to your front door. The Echo Dot is a great gift for a White Elephant exchange because at $24, it comes in at a perfect price point.
4. Capri Blue Iridescent Jar Candle in Volcano
If you don’t know, now you know. Capri Blue candles are some of the most popular candles in the world right now, according to….well, me. The “volcano” scent will make your house smell like you’re in an exotic location eating fresh fruit and listening to the waves crash on a crystal clear beach. If you’re a guy and don’t want to hold onto this gift in the exchange, just do it. You’ll get major kudos with your wife, trust me. You can get this candle here at Anthropologie.
5. Custom Face Socks
This is a borderline gag gift, but it really has the potential to be the hit of the party! Put your face on the socks, put your boss’s face on the socks, put your favorite co-worker’s face on the socks. They’re hilarious, they’re entertaining, and they’re only $24 from DivvyUp. You may want to stock up on these for the whole family, too. What a great stocking stuffer!
